We all know eggs are among the most nutritious foods on the planet. A single large boiled egg contains Vitamin A, B5, B12, B2, Folate, Phosphorus, Selenium with decent amounts of Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Vitamin K, Vitamin B6, Calcium and Zinc. I decided to become a chicken farmer for the day and participate in the Chicken Experience at Church Farm in Ardeley.
They offer the “Little Farmer” or in my case “Big farmer” the chance to help with feeding & collecting eggs from their happy free range Church Farm hens.
You can book a session; Egg collecting is at 11:30 am or 3:00 pm and lasts approximately 1 hour. Each session is £9.95 per child, free for supervising adults. As part of the experience, you get a bag of chicken feed and get to take home half a dozen fresh farm eggs - eggcellent! I accompanied one of their farmers, the wonderful Tom and experienced the free range hens close up while he shared fun facts about these “mother hens”. I got to feed them, pick them up, stroke them and then collected the fresh eggs from their nests. We collected a total of 170 that morning. Tom then showed me their sorting room and how the eggs are graded. All the fresh eggs are for sale in the farm shop and butchery which sells all their other fresh produce, meat and healthy products.
You can plan a whole day out at Church Farm, they also have a farm café on site where you can grab a bite to eat; it’s a fantastic and relaxing day out for the whole family.
You can visit them at Church Farm, Ardeley, Stevenage, SG2 7AH or for more information go to www.churchfarmardeley.co.uk
